Unlike transaction fees, XRP reserves are not burned — they are locked in your account to deter unnecessary account creation and excessive ledger growth. Understanding reserves is essential for anyone working with XRPL.
Current Reserve Levels (2026)
- Base reserve: 1 XRP per account (reduced from 10 XRP in 2024)
- Owner reserve: 0.2 XRP per ledger object owned (offers, trust lines, escrows, etc.)
Why Reserves Exist
Every account and ledger object must be stored by all XRPL validators. Without a reserve requirement, bad actors could flood the ledger with millions of useless accounts and objects, increasing storage costs for everyone. The reserve makes this prohibitively expensive while remaining reasonable for legitimate users.
The 2024 Reserve Reduction
In 2024, XRPL validators voted to reduce the base reserve from 10 XRP to 1 XRP, and the owner reserve from 2 XRP to 0.2 XRP per object. This was a significant improvement in accessibility, lowering the cost of opening a new wallet from ~$15 to ~$1.50 at typical XRP prices.
Reclaiming Reserves
Owner reserves are not permanently locked. When you close an offer, remove a trust line, or finish an escrow, the 0.2 XRP owner reserve for that object is released back to your spendable balance. The base account reserve of 1 XRP cannot be spent but remains in your account.
Reserve vs. Transaction Fee
It is important to distinguish reserves from fees. Reserves are deposits that protect your account’s existence in the ledger; fees are one-time costs per transaction that are burned. Neither is wasteful: reserves stay with you, fees are minuscule.

Must explain to you how all this mistaken idea of denouncing pleasure and praising pain was born and I will give you a complete account of the system, and expound the actual teachings of the great explorer of the truth, the master-builder of human happiness. No one rejects, dislikes, or avoids pleasure itself, because it is pleasure, but because those who do not know how to pursue pleasure rationally encounter consequences that are extremely painful. Nor again is there anyone who loves or pursues or desires to obtain pain of itself, because it is pain, but because occasionally circumstances.
