The XRP Ledger (XRPL) is designed for ultra-low cost transactions. Every standard transaction requires a minimum fee of 0.00001 XRP — also expressed as 10 drops (1 XRP = 1,000,000 drops). As of March 2026, this equates to roughly $0.0000152 USD per transaction.
Unlike many blockchain networks, XRPL transaction fees are not paid to validators or miners. Instead, every fee is permanently destroyed (burned), removing that tiny amount of XRP from the total supply. This elegant design simultaneously deters spam and applies slight deflationary pressure on XRP.
How the Base Fee Is Set
The base fee of 10 drops is not arbitrary. XRPL validators periodically vote on fee settings through the Fee Voting mechanism. Each validator expresses a preferred fee level, and the network adopts the median value among trusted validators roughly every 15 minutes. This democratic process ensures fees stay appropriate relative to hardware costs and XRP value.
Open Ledger Cost & Load Scaling
During periods of unusually high transaction volume, XRPL applies an escalating "open ledger cost." Transactions that cannot meet the open ledger cost are queued for the next ledger rather than rejected outright. This keeps the network stable without simply refusing transactions.
Special Transaction Costs
Most standard transactions (payments, trust lines, offers) cost 10 drops. A few special transactions have higher requirements: AMMCreate requires 0.2 XRP, and multi-signed transactions scale with the number of signers.
Cost in Real Terms
At $0.0000152 per transaction, sending one million XRP payments costs only $15.20. This makes XRPL uniquely suited for high-frequency applications like micropayments, remittances, and DeFi activity.

Must explain to you how all this mistaken idea of denouncing pleasure and praising pain was born and I will give you a complete account of the system, and expound the actual teachings of the great explorer of the truth, the master-builder of human happiness. No one rejects, dislikes, or avoids pleasure itself, because it is pleasure, but because those who do not know how to pursue pleasure rationally encounter consequences that are extremely painful. Nor again is there anyone who loves or pursues or desires to obtain pain of itself, because it is pain, but because occasionally circumstances.
